Sparkmail went from an incredible app to the slowest, most unreliable, constantly crashing app of all time. I can't go more than two days without the app freezing on me. It blows my mind how the development team took such a wrong turn. Stay away from Spark. It's upsetting to say this because I used to love Spark. But their latest version basically ignores the most basic and critical aspect of a good app: performance. If I have to wait 2 seconds for an email to open up then you're failing miserably.
Spark was great until v3 took away their attention from fixing bugs in v2 and killed the third column in v3. Because of the lack of 3 columns, it is pretty much unusable on a tablet or laptop. Sparks support team has always been a, “that’s great; we’ll tell our product manager” and then nothing happens. This seems to be happening with the third column, which is disappointing. I switched to Canary mail, which has its own set of issues as they try to throw AI at everything, but if you turn all that off and customize the toolbar a bit, you get what Spark was with 3 columns.
I've used Spark for years. I understand how many are upset by the latest update, but it didn't make that much of a difference to me. I wouldn't say I love the design, but I haven't yet found anything that works as well across devices. I was a Superhuman user for about a year or so back in 2019, and while I loved how simplistic its design was, I couldn't justify paying for it every month anymore.
This is the only email app that I've stuck with long term. I have around 8 emails accounts that I manage with Spark. One of the nice to haves with Spark is that if there's a new sending it won't go directly to inbox, they'll ask if to allow the sender or block them. So it doesn't end up cluttering the inbox - and keep spam out of the inbox. There's also an AI summerisation feature that's also nice, cause I can set emails from certian senders to be always summerised, so newletters are a breeze to go through. The best feature is probably that I only have log in with one email address when setting up on a new device, and it'll sync all the email addresses. No need to log in to all the accounts one by one.
Spark 2 was my go to email app for years and an app I recommended to all my friends. Spark 3 threw all of that out the window. It's a downgrade in almost every way. It's missing features that were in 2, is full of bugs, has awful performance now (freezes, crashes, etc.), and is just not ready for public release. Instead, they focus on new features like AI replies instead of fixing the bugs and trying to have feature parity with Spark 2. You can't even open an email in a separate window, what email app doesn't support that? Spark 3, apparently. The number of bugs, related to basic functionality, is astonishing. Some examples are shift clicking to select multiple emails is broken if the first item you select is scrolled off the screen and copying text from an email you're replying to, while in the reply/compose window, does not actually copy. I can't believe this product was released in the state it's in. It should still be in alpha. It feels like they're trying to force a certain workflow on users, even when users say they don't want that and that it requires more clicks to perform the same tasks that you could in Spark 2. Requiring a subscription for (some) of the same functionality that was in Spark 2 is just the icing on the cake. I'd gladly pay for the Spark 2 experience, but wouldn't use Spark 3 even if everything was free (it's that bad). I realize Spark 2 is still available (for now), but the way they've handled this whole Spark 3 situation has made me lose all faith in Readdle/Spark and I'm moving on. RIP Spark, it was good while it lasted.
I have been using Spark for over 6 years, in my opinion it is the best email client for teams and individuals. I have tried many other email apps including Outlook, gmail, Airmail, Apple mail, Thunderbird, Polymail and Edison mail. Spark is unique in the way it categorizes emails into email groups, such as newsletters and notifications, and a grouping for priority senders. They recently added a gatekeeper which can block spam domains and they never get to you inbox. An now Spark has an AI feature which can modify your writing in strong or soft ways of your choosing. When I first started with Spark there was a banner when you opened it "Love your email again" and I can say I still love it after all these years. 💛🇺🇦💙
I have used Thunderbird and Mail on my Mac for a few years, but I wasn't satisfied. I switched to Spark a couple of years ago and some features have definitely improved my life! I love the ability to use pre-written messages (too bad it's not a feature in the new Spark 3), I like the simple, clean, clear interface. I love being able to share certain conversations via URL or being able to quickly log in or out from any device, syncing all my accounts together, including signatures. I am really satisfied!
Disappointed in opinionated UX choices and Hey-style changes that attempt to reinvent my email workflow. I gave it a try for a few weeks but went back to Spark 2. Email doesn't need to be solved in such a manner. The best email client is the one that lets me quickly triage, respond and defer messages in a versatile enough way that respects the individual user workflows that have been ingrained for years—if not decades. The only reason I rated it 2 stars instead of 1 is that after the negative feedback and reviews started to roll in they reversed course to keep the older, better app version available and functioning while they worked to restore features that were missing and resolve subscription-based bugs that should have never shipped in the first place. Once I'm forced to leave Spark 2 I'll be moving to Apple Mail or another 3rd party email client. And I'll be disappointed because none of those are as nice as Spark 2, yet all of them (including Hey) are better than this newest iteration.
I love this app. It has really make my life management while in a role with a lot of different kinds of email. I used spark before, and it was great. Then I changed companies and tried to live without it. So rough. When I came back to it, they have this great new version. Really brings zero inbox to life. Spark before did a good job of sorting the important vs not. Especially compared to gmail. The new UX is great! Simple and archiving (Mark it done) easy and fun. I rip though my email and quickly mark them done or snooze to remind me later. Love it! Really encourages only using your email a few times a day, which is the way it should be used. Can't wait for the planned calendar integration feature. Had it in the old version and it was a great view of the time slot, making an accept or not decision easy.
Most of the ratings and awards are misleading since those don't have anything to do with the new resource-hungry Electron app with, in my opinion, horrible user experience. Readdle made a "revolutionary" change to the new UI which makes you "more focused" by removing the 3 column view and showing you one column at the time so you can click more and lose the larger picture and context as a bonus. Readdle, please at least fix e-mail content slow scrolling issue in latest version of MacOS native app so we can continue using it. Thank you.
I am recanting my first reaction to Spark 3. Users are often quite emotionally attached to their ways and features, and often times the first reaction isn't always the most well-considered response. Although it seems that Spark may have overly inspired itself in the workflows offered by Basecamp's HEY app, upon studying it a bit more, it is a welcoming progression from V2. I guess the main issue was they way that the subscription model was introduced into a drastically different experience that did not include previously owned features. That's what sparked (no pun intended) the reactive fire from most users. I cannot say I dislike the direction the team is going with an Electron-based app and its offer for focus, shortcutting and processing velocity. These are all great ambitions to be aspired (although that bundled notifications line away from the top of the screen is a UX heinous crime). We as users may sometimes forget to praise changes, more so from where they are trying to get to instead of the first steps towards that are often meddled by obstacles. Definitely not a perfect release. Promising though. More importantly, it still comes from a group of people who listen and legitimately care about solving users issues. We should all get behind and encourage that; specially counting how much of the features can be used for free. Keep at it. Fix these smaller hiccups. You're great, and I am still applauding.
Spark email V3 is a rewrite of IMO the best email client out there. I have been a user since V1 and have tried an compared many other email apps but for me Spark is head and shoulders above others in a crowded field. V3 is fast and the way it is organized I can get through hundreds of emails very quickly. I was on the beta testing group and while it is true that this release is not in parity with V2XXX, Spark developers are embarking on a new paradigm for email and I know for a fact that robust features and awesome UI will come in time. I am using both versions side by side and the feature to block or accept new senders is paying off for me in spades.
Sorry guys, you lost me at the last upgrade. The design is way too directive for my comfort. Coming from Spark 2, forcing me to use emails in a completely different and frankly pretty restrictive way you've designed for Spark 3 without any other option is the opposite of what I envision a good user experience to be. Also this product is clearly not ready for market, and I'm tired of the launch it first and fix it later attitude of many software vendors. Thanks for providing Spark 2 for all these years, but I'm done.
